Erring on the Side of Caution

April is Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Month. We have to acknowledge the ugly reality of sexual abuse. In our churches, it is important we take measures to ensure the safety of our children. Every church needs to have policies in place that errs on the side of caution. Consider these statistics:

  • 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before 18.
  • The abuser is a stranger in only 1 in 10 cases (90% of the time the child knows their abuser).
  • According to an article in Christianity Today, there were on average 23 new articles each day between 2005 and 2008 in the secular media revealing sexual abuse allegations in U.S. Protestant churches.

Check out the article titled No Family Secrets in the Church in this month’s newsletter from Church Volunteer Central for steps your church can take to reduce the risk of sexual abuse.
